"In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved." - Franklin D. Roosevelt
Welcome to the Nationwide Debate. We welcome your input on important issues of the day that you want included here. That enables us to keep this section ever changing and it will serve as a tool to educate the public on matters that will likely surface for debate during major election cycles. We also welcome feedback, for public consumption, from elected officials with the understanding that USAY Foundation's policy is to present both sides of an issue so that voters can make the final decision on their own.
Affirmative action is a policy or program promoting the representation of people belonging to a group who have historically been discriminated against, with the aim of creating a more egalitarian society. This typically focuses on education, employment, health care or social welfare. In employment, affirmative action may also be known as employment equity or preferential hiring. In this context affirmative action requires that institutions increase hiring and promotion of mandated groups.
Legacy admissions for the children of alumni in colleges, opportunities for white people to vote, own property and receive a quality education have existed for generations. Laws on the books creating equal opportunities for racial minorities to participate fully in the American Dream are so recent that affirmative policies to promote the inclusion of historically deprived groups benefits all society by furthering the march towards liberty and justice for all.
Affirmative action is reverse discrim-ination. While no one denies that racism has a lasting and ugly impact on America, there is a better way than claiming two wrongs make a right. Strong laws against and penalties for race and gender discrimination exist and should be actively enforced. This is the fairest way to ensure progress and simultaneously avoid the division and hatred modern day preferences engender.

"Anyone who thinks that blacks and whites are on a level playing field is a victim of wishful thinking. The effects of centuries of racism can not be erased overnight!"

- Jonathan Goetz, 21

"Affirmative action is a divisive and ineffectual solution to the problem of racism and discrimination in America. It took many years to entrench racist beliefs and it will take the passing of a good deal of time to level the playing field. But it is happening."

- T. Navarro
San Francisco, CA
